Leidraad bij de opleiding Milieu-natuurwetenschappen is dat we kritisch naar onze relatie met de omringende wereld moeten kijken. We zullen moeten leren hoe we schoner kunnen produceren en zuiniger kunnen omgaan met energie en grondstoffen. We dienen dus zoveel mogelijk - liefst uitsluitend - hernieuwbare grondstoffen en energie te gebruiken. Ook moeten we zoeken naar producten en productieprocessen die beter aansluiten bij natuurlijke processen. En onze samenleving moet leren om industriële producten niet zomaar af te danken, maar om ze opnieuw te gebruiken. Kenmerkend voor de opleiding Milieu-natuurwetenschappen is oplossingsgericht denken. De bestudering van de natuurwetenschappen vindt plaats met het oog op het leveren van een bijdrage aan de oplossing van huidige en het voorkomen van (mogelijke) toekomstige milieuproblemen.

Courses aim at gaining a deeper knowledge of natural science, for example in the field of energy conversions or lifecycle analysis. Besides that, participants will gain insight in the context of sustainable development. Students are taught how to operate on a high level in an interdisciplinary group in order to solve a topical problem of social relevance.

We nowadays understand 'development' as a complex process, which has to combine the sometimes contradictory goals of economic growth and efficiency, increased social and political justice and protection of the natural environment. This is summarised in the concept 'sustainable development'. This has to be achieved in a dynamic context of increasing integration in the world economy of nations, cities and villages. Globalisation and its consequences are now at the heart of the development debate. As a consequence of globalisation the development debate is no longer an issue for development practitioners alone. Virtually everyone who wants to work at the international dimension is confronted with issues as equity, social justice and sustainability.

In this young scientific discipline the sustainable relationship between environment and society is the core issue. The central concept is the analogy between natural and technical systems. When designing technical systems natural systems can be used as an example. In nature material cycles are almost completely closed. Waste from one process or organism is used as a starting material for another. In today’s society however, the use of materials results in depletion of resources, pollution and global change. Industrial Ecology thus focuses on society and economy but not in monetary terms. Industrial ecology focuses on the physical aspects of societal processes: the use of energy and minerals to produce and use products and the associated production of waste and emissions. In order to move away from unsustainable production and consumption knowledge on the physical economy and on new coalitions of actors to achieve this is essential.
