Beschrijving
This English course at the Masters-level is part of the MSc “Leisure, tourism and environment’ at Wageningen University and analyses the role of governmental, business and 'third sector' organisations in innovation processes towards sustainable tourism development. The course focuses on practices and instruments of actors at various levels of scale (international, national as well as regional and local). Methods and techniques, used to reconcile various interests, are discussed and applied in various contexts: urban as well as rural areas in the Netherlands, Europe as well as less developed countries. The course also discusses research into sustainable tourism development.
Upon completion of the course:
• Students are able to analyse and describe the relation between leisure, tourism and sustainable development and to present the central issues at stake;
• Students are able to recount and evaluate the relation between globalisation, tourism and sustainable development;
• Students are able to recount and critically evaluate the concepts of ‘new tourism’ and ‘power jigsaw’;
• Students are able to analyse, compare and evaluate the aims and practices of and instruments used by governmental, business and third sector organisations;
• Students are able to describe and compare methods and techniques used to reconcile various interests related to sustainable development of leisure and tourism;
• Students are able to draw up a research proposal to substantiate the development of a creative and innovative idea for sustainable development of leisure and tourism and to defend their case.
